This project was a useful tool which helped me develop multiple skills related to leadership. Communication is an essential skill for any leader, especially for school a counselor. Interning as a school counselor provided ample time to practice this skill. I spoke to a wide variety of individuals including students, parents, teachers, administrators, and volunteers. Being able to communicate with many different people is a vital skill that this experience aided me in developing. Another important skill for leaders to have is teamwork. The opportunity I had to work with so many other individuals helped aid this skill to be developed. In the setting I carried out my internship there is a team of people all working towards helping students succeed in school. It’s critical that all team members work cohesively in order for results to be rewarding. I also developed digital literacy skills in learning how to work the program Encore as well as discovering how to more efficiently use other programs such as Excel and PowerPoint. The EDGE project also helped me develop other leadership skills such as initiative, motivation, organization, creativity, flexibility, responsibility, as well as a multitude of other skills. This project also allowed me to gain insights into what it means to be a leader. I learned that the general stereotype of a leader, an outspoken extrovert, isn’t the only type of effective leader. Other styles of leadership can also yield positive outcomes. I learned how to utilize my personality into being a leader who can create a positive impact.
